Dual fuel generators offer a great alternative to conventional generators running on gasoline. The main promises they make are the increased fuel efficiency, less reliance on one single type of fuel in case of emergency and last but not least – environmental friendliness. However, do dual fuel generators really live up to their expectations? To end this dilemma for many of us, I am introducing the Duromax XP4850EH generator – a great dual fuel generator allowing to use both liquid propane and gasoline.
This generator is a good choice for home backup power and for jobsites. With its 3850 running watts it is perfectly suitable for smaller household whose power requirements are not particularly high.
It can easily power popular job site appliances such as air compressors, circular saws, welders, drills etc.
Its environmental friendliness is another great feature. It is both EPA and CARB compliant and therefore can be used in 50 states.
Duromax XP4850EH – what’s so special about this generator?
The generator comes with solid steel frame and the popular DuroMax 208cc OHV engine. These guarantee long run time without requiring regular heavy maintenance. This will save you a good deal of money in the long run. I recommend this generator due to its agility and strength, unique design as well as high ergonomics and safety considerations.
Duromax XP4850EH has a 210cc 7 hp four stroke air cooled engine. With 4850 surge watts and 3850 running watts it provides enough power to power larger household and job site appliances.
Note that the wattage is slightly lower when running on propane, which is a common thing for all dual fuel generators. It’s 4608 starting and 3658 running watts. As you can notice though this is a really tiny difference yet still something to take into account.
The generator has an electric starter which means you do not have to do the gruesome recoil start every time you want to run this machine. This little handy feature takes some burden off your shoulders in the longer term.
DuroMax XP4850EH comes in with handy casing made of high strength tubes for structural reinforcing and added protection from weather elements.
I really like the fact that when building their generators, Duromax goes beyond the most obvious elements such as frame and engine and ensures that even the smaller parts are built using the strongest materials.
Wheels are a good example – XP4850EH has got rubber wheels with steel frames instead of the plastic ones so commonly seen in the majority of portable generators. Although this might look like a very minor advantage, in my opinion, it adds the layer of trust knowing that you get a generator built to last for a long time with no compromises on quality.
Another feature worth mentioning is the built-in silence which helps reduce the noise level. You will certainly agree with me that noise is probably one single most annoying feature of most generators. Therefore every step the manufacturer makes to quiet the generator is heavily welcomed.
XP4850EH has got a nice simple control panel featuring what you would exactly expect to see there. It has in total 3 outlets: 2 x 120V household GFCI outlets and 1 x 120V/240V 30 amp twist lock outlet.
A voltmeter is a handy addition helping you visualise the total power output.
What I like
Dual fuel capability – this is the obvious feature I like the most about this generator. It gives you options on what fuel to use and also mix the two depending on the situation. This is highly convenient regardless of the situation.
Fuel efficiency and economy – I like one cool feature of this generator that it conserves and uses little fuel. It can run non-stop without much variation in the output.
High power output – I take particular liking for the high power created by Duromax generator. 3850 running watts is high enough to run most devices.
Long running hours – this generator can run up to 28 hours, 20 hours on propane and 8 on gas at 50% load. This is an incredibly huge amount of time giving you elasticity of programs and confidence in the generator.
What I don’t like
Dual fuel generators are a bit more costly compared to other portable generators offering the same wattage. However, even though you will end up paying more at first, the long term fuel savings might be worth the initial investment. It also depends on how often do you plan to use the generator and how environmentally conscious you are.
Conclusion – should you buy the Duromax XP4850EH?
I would say: YES. Duromax XP4850EH generator is a great dual fuel generator and certainly one of the best of its type on the market. It is a sturdy machine, providing long service time with little maintenance required. I recommend it to everyone who doesn’t want to solely rely on gas and takes environmental factors into concern.
Since propane is on average 33% more efficient as a fuel than gasoline, purchasing this generator can be a good decision purely from the financial point of view too.
What clearly makes this generator stand out from the majority of portable generators is its hybrid construction, allowing you to choose between two types of fuel – propane and gas. While this is not the only generator of its kind on the market, Duromax XP4850 outperforms its competitors in terms of design and reliability.
- Fuel efficient
- Sturdy design
- Great wattage
- Long run time
- Not the cheapest
