1. Duromax XP4850EH
Duromax XP4850EH is one of the most popular hybrid generators on the market. It is also one of the most heavily recommended gas/propane contractor generators for those who need a unit operating within 3000 – 5000 running wattage range.
If you need a generator to run electric tools like saws, air compressors or belt sanders – this generator is a suitable choice.
RV owners looking for a conventional dual fuel portable generator could also give it their consideration.
However, for RV I personally recommend the Champion dual fuel inverter generator.
XP4850EH comes with a sturdy steel frame providing good protection from potential damage.
The generator runs on a 208cc 7hp OHV Duromax engine.
Fuel efficiency is one significant advantage of this generator.
It can run for up to 8 hours at 50% load when powered by gasoline and up to 9 hours at 50% on a single 20 lb tank of propane.
Thanks to the built-in silencer the Duromax XP4850EH produces less noise than a lot of other generators of this size.
However, it is still noticeably louder than most inverter generators.
This Duromax generator has got 3 outlets available: 2 x 120V household GFCI & 1 x 120V/240V 30 amp twist lock outlet.
- Fuel efficient
- Versatile – good for construction, home backup or RV
- Reasonably quiet
- Heavy
2. Duromax XP12000EH
Duromax XP12000EH is the most powerful generator offered by Duromax.
It provides 12000 starting and 9500 running watts of power when running on gas.
As for propane, it is capable of generating up to 11400 starting watts and 9025 running watts.
With so much power on board, Duromax XP12000EH is a great choice for those looking for a home backup power supply for hurricane seasons.
You can easily run most of your key appliances on it without having to invest in a much more expensive standby generator.
If you are looking for a generator to run particularly energy-hungry electric tools like MIG welders – this Duromax generator should run them flawlessly.
It provides enough watts to eg. power a 230 Amp MIG welder.
This hybrid powerhouse offers you the choice between manual recoil and electric start.
Long runtime is another strong point of this generator.
It can work continuously for nearly 9 hours at 50% load on gas.
One full bottle of propane would enough to make this generator operate for around 7 hours at 50% load.
Note that if you are planning to operate it at maximum capacity, those times can be much shorter, requiring you to refuel more frequently.
The good news is that switching between two fuel types is very easy and is done by simply pushing the right button.
You could therefore technically run this generator without major interruption for more than 16 hours at 50% load.
The generator is both EPA and CARP certified, meaning that residents of all US states including California can legally use it.
Overall, if you are looking for an efficient portable home backup power generator – Duromax XP12000EH is the one you should have a look at.
In contrast, this generator can be too large and too expensive for those who need something smaller to power only the essential equipment.
If you are not sure how big of a generator you actually need, check out this calculator to find out.
- Powerful – good source of backup power for homes in the event of a power outage
- Solid steel frame
- Easy switching between fuels
- Long run time
- Very heavy
- Loud
3. Duromax XP4400E
The Duromax XP4400E is one of the most popular generators offered by Duromax.
It is a reliable machine which delivers exactly what a typical portable generator should do – runs continuously for a few hours without interruptions.
It has a large fuel tank the total capacity of 4 gallons.
One refuelling should give you up to 8 hours of constant runtime depending on what kinds of appliances you plan to run. Don’t expect to operate this generator for full 8 hours when running it at the highest loads.
The generator is easy to start thanks to the electric start. You simply need to push the button to turn it on.
Manual recoil start is also available in case the electric one fails.
While starting a generator is easy, the maintenance might be a slightly more difficult task for inexperienced users. The manual leaves a lot to be desired and doesn’t make it easy.
Just like many other quality generators, Duromax XP4400E has got an automatic low-oil shutdown system. You don’t need to worry about forgetting to add oil and the resulting damage to the generator. It will automatically turn off whenever it detects that there is not enough oil for safe operation.
Duromax XP4400 features both 120V and 240V outlets. That means you can use it both for home and the RV.
To sum up, if you are looking for a versatile Duromax generator operating within 3000 – 6000 wattage range, XP4400E should satisfy your requirements.
- Good runtime
- Electric start
- Automatic low oil level shutdown
- Cheap
- Maintenance can be difficult
4. Duromax XP10000E
Duromax XP10000E is one of the most versatile generators available on the market.
With is 10,000 starting watts and 8,000 running watts it can be an indispensable backup power supply for your home. 8,000 watts is enough to run all essential electrical appliances in your household in the event of an emergency power outage.
As long as you don’t expect to power the entire large-sized home, XP10000E will serve you perfectly well.
Especially if you live in the parts of the US frequently tormented by tropical storms and hurricanes (such as Louisiana or Florida) – you should definite have a closer look at this generator.
Duromax XP10000E is equipped with a 18HP 440cc OHV engine.
The motor is covered by a metal frame which looks pretty solid. This is certainly not a cheap model made of plastic.
The generator has got a large 9-gallon fuel tank. Depending on the load it can run continuously for up to 8 hours.
Since it is a very large generator, you can’t expect it to run noiselessly. At higher loads, it can become indeed quite loud.
I would recommend the homeowners to place it within a wooden enclosure to minimize the noise (and protect it from bad weather).
However, it is still much quieter than most of the older types of portable generators with large engines.
Overall, if you need a big portable generator with high wattage to power all essential appliances in your home – Duromax XP10000E should deserve your attention.

Duromax XP4000S
Duromax XP4000S is a popular portable generator.
Most of the people who have purchased it praise its flawless operation and quiet engine. These are the strong points often mentioned in various Duromax generator reviews left by customers.
While it is certainly not as quiet as inverter generators, XP4000S is quieter than most of the other conventional portable generators we have researched.
It is also pretty cheap. You can often buy it online for less than $500.
The Duromax XP4000S has got a Durostar 7.0 HP air cooled OHV engine. The motor is equipped with the automatic low oil shutdown mechanism.
The engine also comes up with an air-cooling system which does a good job at preventing it from overheating.
Just like other Duromax generators, XP4000S is built with a heavy-duty steel frame.
The control panel features a few handy essentials such as oil warning light, circuit breaker and a voltmeter.
XP4000S has got a variety of outlets suitable for different purposes. These include 120V 20Amp 5-20R outlets and 1x 120V 30Amp L5 30 outlet.
One thing I dislike about this generator is that the wheels have to be purchased separately. I don’t understand why Duromax hasn’t decided to include them in the kit especially since the generator is a bit too heavy to carry. Wheels are therefore essential.
The good news is that the wheelset is not expensive at all.
- Air-cooled engine
- Steel frame
- Cheap
- Relatively quiet
- Wheels are not included in the kit.
